Sanford
On The River
In 1870, Henry Sanford purchased 12,548 acres and laid out the community of Sanford. Formally founded in 1877, Sanford is located on Lake Monroe, which is actually an enlarged portion of the St. John’s River. It is the county seat of Seminole County with a population 49,124 (2006 Census).
Originally it was a citrus-based agricultural and steamship destination for goods entering and leaving Central Florida. It then turned to becoming one of the largest suppliers of celery after the devastating freezes on 1894 and 1895 wiped out the area’s citrus industry.
In the 1940’s Sanford Naval Air Station was established and was home to more than 2,000 military personnel during WWII. It remained active until the late 1960’s when it was deeded over and became Sanford-Orlando International Airport. The airport has recently gone through a successful and major redevelopment and expansion to better accommodate the growing tourist and business community.
