Covering almost 15 square miles, the city of Oviedo has its roots in farming and much of it is still considered rural. Located east-northeast of Orlando, its population is 30,618 (2006 Census). It is located approximately 20 minutes from downtown Orlando and is convenient to highways 434 and 417 (The Greenway). The Econlockhatchee River runs through the eastern portion of the city and is a popular river for kayaking and canoeing.
The city is currently in the midst of a redevelopment of its downtown area and plans for new residential and commercial uses are in the works. A new hospital is also planned for the area.
