DeBary
History along The St. John's River
In 1871 Frederick DeBary, a wealthy wine merchant from New York, purchased 400 acres of land from a pioneer couple and built a massive hunting lodge he named “DeBary Hall” – which can be toured where it still stands today. Over time, an additional 9,000 acres would be acquired and a steamship operation started which eventually included 13 steamships. The shipping operation employed a total crew of 3000 and ran up and down the St. John’s River from DeBary and nearby Sanford to the Atlantic at Jacksonville.
Today's Community
Not formally incorporated until 1993, the city is now mainly an affordable residential and retirement community with a population of 16,427 (2006 Census). Located in southern Volusia County on the border with Seminole County and the St John's River, two of its premier golf course communities are Glen Abbey and DeBary Golf and Country Club. The latest addition, and arguably its most upscale community is the Mediterranean–style Riveria Bella located directly on the St. John’s.
