The story all started in the late 1950's just south of a sleepy little town in Central Florida. Just south of Orlando, vast tracts of vacant and undeveloped land were being bought up by outsiders. To keep the price in check - lest the word get out - different third parties were used to make the purchases. So secretive was the mission that these people even took misleading flights home to California to protect the true buyer's identity. In the end, The Disney Company ended up buying more than 27,000 acres – 43 square miles - of vacant and undeveloped land – at an average cost of $182 per acre !
And in 1972 – Disney World – the first of its four theme parks and its sports complex - opened its gates – and Central Florida hasn't looked back since.
"The House of Mouse" is in fact probably the number one thing people associate with Central Florida.
