Casselberry
The Ferneries
Located in Seminole County, the area was developed beginning in 1926 by Hibbard Casselberry when he purchased the land around what was then known as Fern Park, after the many ferneries that were in the area.
The town of Casselberry itself came about as a part of a campaign by ole Hibbard himself by convincing residents of Fern Park and the Casselberry area that the only way to avoid property taxes being imposed upon them by the Florida Legislature was to form a town themselves. The residents voted to do this in October of 1940 and the tax-free Town of Casselberry was born.
The ferneries were declared non essential for the WWII war effort and the area turned to manufacturing war materiel such as tent liners and bomb parachutes.
The town was incorporated as a city in 1965 and remained property tax free until 1976.
