Ocean, Oceanfront and the Intracoastal Waterway
Central Florida beaches are some of the finest in Florida and can be enjoyed year-round. Tourists and the local population of Central Florida generally head for Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach or Cocoa Beach; each having their own distinctive character and flair. Daytona, New Smyrna and Cocoa
Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores and Ponce Inlet are located in Volusia County and are the most northern beaches in the Central Florida area. Daytona Beach has a permanent population of almost 65,000 and is the largest beachside city in Central Florida. The Daytona International Speedway is located there and it is the center attraction for Spring Break, Bike Week and Race Week each year. The beach area is separated from the mainland by the Halifax River which also contains the Intracoastal Waterway – a 3,000 mile long inland set of channels, canals, bays and rivers designed to fit together to provide a safer passage for boats traversing the eastern seaboard and the gulf states without having to venture out into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf Of Mexico. This allows for | waterfront properties | to be both on the ocean or the river.
Also located in Volusia County, New Smyrna Beach and Bethune Beach are just south of Ponce Inlet and are more characteristic of the small beach towns of historic Florida. The permanent population is marked at just over 23,000. Here too the beaches are separated by a river - the Indian River - from the mainland, and here too the Intracoastal makes its way further south within it.
Located at the eastern end of the “BeachLine Highway”, a straight four to six lane thoroughfare between Orlando and the Atlantic Ocean, Cocoa Beach is just south of the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. Its population is put at almost 12,000, but is part of a string of small cities which include Port Canaveral, Merritt Island, Satellite Beach. There are actually two river systems here – the Banana River and the Indian River and the area enjoysiles of sandy beaches on both.

Lakes and Lakefront
While most people think of the ocean for beaches, Florida is unique in that it also has more than 7,700 lakes larger than 10 acres. Some are linked up by navigable canals to form chains containing as many as 11 lakes. The Central Florida are is host to the Butler Chain in Windermere, the Clermont Chain in Clermont, the Conway Chain in Orlando, the Harris Chain in Mt. Dora and the Winter Park Chain in Winter Park. In addition there are many areas with multiple separate lakes such as Altamonte Springs, Lake Mary and Longwood. Many of these lakes host single or multiple communities and have their own sandy beaches as well. Some are within the communities for the use of residents and their guests, but many are open to the public.
